SENSE SCOTLAND: Cane skill group

El grupo de "Habilidades con la caña" está integrado por persona ciegas que están aprendiendo a manejarse y moverse por el espacio sin la ayuda del guía.El tutor es James. Las sesiones trascurren en las zonas de paso principales de Touchbase, y también en el exterior, para conocer y controlar el entorno. Trabajan con él Gerard, Martin, Adam, Siobha, Adam y Alan.

The "Cane Skills" group is composed by blind people who are learning to orient themself and move  without the aid of a guide .The tutor is James. The sessions elapse at transit points of TouchBase and also outside, around the block, where they learn how understand and navigate on their own. Gerard,Martin, Adam, Siobhan, Adam and Alan are working at it.

Parte de la metodología consiste en analizar y memorizar el recorrido: pasamanos -hueco de los baños -puerta de adultos -track (pieza de plástico en el suelo que sujeta la moqueta y recorre un camino de un extremo a otro de la cafetería) -y de nuevo pasamanos. Además, siempre empiezan y acaban con una reunión en la que todos los que participarón (participantes, carers, tutores y voluntarios) cuentan sus impresiones, dificultades, y sugerencias.

As part of the methodology, they analyze and memorize the route: handrail - toilets gap - adult door- track (piece of plastic on the floor that holds the carpet from one end to another of the cafeteria) -again handrail. Besides, it always begins and end with a meeting at which all who participated (participants, carers, guardians and volunteers) share their impressions, difficulties, and suggestions for the next session.

 Cuando yo me incorporé al grupo llevaban ya un tiempo trabajando, y comprobé que conocen el espacio de la cafetería bastante bien. La excepción fue Siobha, porque era su primer día: se quedó confundida en el hueco del baño y buscó rápidamente la referencia del suelo. Para ayudarla a reorientarse  los guías golpeaban la pared, dandole así la referencia acústica. 

When I joined the group they already had been working for a while, and I found that knew the cafeteria area quite well. Siobhan was the only one who had more difficulties, because it was her first day. She got confused at the toilet gap and quickly sought the reference of the floor. To help her to reorient herself, her guides hit the wall. Doing this, she went towards the sound, and  she was able to find  the wall again.

James me estuvo contando cosas sobre la percepción en personas que les falla algún sentido.  En este grupo son todos ciegos. James ponía el ejemplo de que si tocas en el brazo a una persona con vista, esta mirará hacia donde le tocaste. Pero si tocas en el brazo a una persona ciega, cambiará la dirección hacia el lado  que tocaste, es decir dirigirá todo su cuerpo hacia allí. La reacción es similar con los estímulos sonoros, la persona se dirigirá hacia donde escucha la llamada.

James told me more about people who have a failure in one of their senses. He explain to me that if you touch on the arm to a sighted person, this one turns the look to the side where has been touched. But, if you touch  the arm to a blind person, this one leads the whole body to the direction you touched him/her. The reaction is similar with sound stimuli, the person heads towards where the call sounds.

Another route they do is go around the block. Here is  a google map link  where you can check and even perform the same route using the wee yellow man.

 El camino es más largo y con muchos más obstáculos que el de la cafetería . Por ejemplo, al torcer la esquina y dejar Touchbase atrás lo primero con lo que nos topamos es un a tienda de muebles de segunda mano que despliega parte de su mercancía en la calle.  Martín encontró un sofá y allí se quedó sentado un buen rato.

The road is longer, and with many more obstacles, than the one which runs through the cafe . For example, when we turned the corner and left behind Touchbase the first thing that we faced was a second hand furniture shop that displays some of her stuff on the street. Martin found a sofa and spent a good time sitting there.

Más adelante hay un concesionario de motos. Y en otro tramo una bajada a un sótano cubierta sólo por una plancha de metal bastante insegura, se movía mucho y vibraba al caminar sobre ella. Todos pasaron con mucha inseguridad, bueno a casi todos porque Martin pasó por encima feliz, sin ninguna muestra de aprehensión.

Beyond, there is a motorbike shop. A bit further, there is a stair to a basement covered only by a sheet metal which moves and vibrates when walking on it. All of them went through, feeling a bit insecure. Well, almost everyone because Martin went over happily, without any sign of apprehension.

Esta fue mi despedida de Sense. Así que me despido con una vista sobre el río Clyde, mi recorrido habitual hacia TouchBase.

This was my farewell to Sense. So, I say goodbye with a view over the Clyde, my usual walk towards TouchBase.

SENSE SCOTLAND: Garden group

Este grupo se centra en actividades al aire libre relacionadas con la jardinería y también con el arte. Tiene lugar una vez a la semana y siempre fuera de TouchBase, llueva o truene (cosa bastante habitual en Escocia). He conocido dos de sus lugares de encuentro.

This group focuses on outdoor activities related to gardening and also art . It takes place once a week and always out of TouchBase, rain or shine. I have known two of their meeting sites.

El lugar al que van dos veces al mes es un refugio del Scotland Trust Charity. Está situado en las faldas del Ben Lomond, junto al lago del mismo nombre, y llevan yendo desde hace un año y medio. 

Fui con ellos el 24 de Julio: hacía muchísimo calor (Sí !!!). Estuvimos paseando y recogiendo hierbas para teñir lana con una técnica de teñido que no usa fuego sino el calor del sol.

Comimos, tomamos te de una vulcano kettle, y yo comi, por primera vez en mi vida, una frambuesa directamente de la mata.

  

One of these places, where they go twice a month, is a shelter of Scotland Charity Trust. It is located at the foot of Ben Lomond, near the lake of the same name, and they have been going there for a year and a half.

I went with them on July 24: it was very hot (Yes !!!!). We walked and collected herbs for dyeing wool, using a dyeing technique with no fire, only the hot sun.

We ate, we had tea made in a vulcano kettle, and for the first time in my life, I ate a raspberry directly from a bush.

Este verano ha sido super cálido, una maravilla. Pero había que tener cuidado con los midges, variedad de mosquito escocés que no se ve pero que pica con rabia, especialmente cuando hace mucho calor y no hay viento.

This summer has been very warm, that´s so wonderful. But, we had to be careful with the midges, a kind of scottish mosquito unseen, but itchy angrily especially when it's hot and there is no wind.

La vulcano kettle

Esta es la técnica de teñido: llenar un bote de cristal con lana y el material que pigmentará la lana, en este caso ortigas; se le añade agua y se deja al sol por meses.

This is the technique of dyeing: fill up a glass jar with wool and vegetal stuff (in this case nettles) which will give colour to the wool, add  some water  and let it under the sun for  months.

El otro punto de encuentro es el jardín de una de las casas que Sense tiene diseminadas por la ciudad para sus usuarios. Está situado en un barrio del sur de Glasgow, Craigton. Aquí el grupo trabaja en diferentes proyectos: 

Cardado de la lana que se utiliza para teñir, usando métodos tradicionales/ecofriendly.

Recopilación y ensamblaje de botellas de plástico recicladas, que pronto se convertirán en las paredes de un invernadero.

Recolección y siembra de semillas.

También llevan a cabo un gradual cambio en las plantas que tiene el jardín, estas fueron plantadas por el ayuntamiento, que fue quien construyó las casas, y son casi todas arbustos muy espinosos y cero comestibles. El grupo quiere convertir este espacio en un lugar de encuentro más agradable para los que habitan la casa y para el resto de personas de Sense que vengan de visita. La última adquisición ha sido una caseta de madera que servirá de refugio los días de frío y lluvia. Yo vi su construccion. En un dia los operarios la pusieron en pie con el aislante del tejado incluido. 
Tengo prometida una visita la próxima primavera  al Garden para ver como ha cambiado.

The other meeting site is at the garden of one of houses that Sense has for its users. It is located in the southside of Glasgow, Craigton. Here, the group is working on different projects:
Carding the wool that later they will use for dyeing. It takes a lot of patience, since you have to comb it little by little so as to be able to spin it afterwards.
Collecting and assembling of recycled plastic bottles that will soon become the walls of a greenhouse. They make piles with them,  before tying them with thread.
Collecting seeds that later they will plant.
They also are doing a gradual change in plants having the garden, because  almost all are bushes which are very thorny and not for human consumption. The group wants to turn this space into a more pleasant place for those who live in the flats and also for visitors. A place to enjoy while it is built.
The latest acquisition was a wooden cabin that will give them refuge on cold and rainy days. I saw its construction. In just one day, workers set it up, even with insulation roof. 
I promised a visit to the garden for next spring, to see the changes.

Botes con lana y distintas plantas y frutos que la iran tiñendo. Distingo helechos, arándanos rojos, flores amarillas y repollo morado.

Jars filled up with wool, and also different plants and fruits that will dye the wool. I can see ferns, cranberries, yellow flowers and purple cabbage.

Este es el espantapájaros que ahuyenta a los coñejos. Realmente funciona.
